Description: I remember walking through the gate and seeing a wall of scaffolding, DJ at the top, lights flicking about it wasn’t too packed, maybe 500 people, pretty poor attendance from memory. The one thing that pissed me off was the volume was down so low, I could hear myself breathing, it was a fucking disgrace. If you’re going to spend a shit load of money on bringing over top DJ’s, make sure people will be able to hear them. Carl Cox put on a brave face and played a good set. Laurent Garnier had a hissy fit and storming off, I assumed that it was because of the volume, but it could have been the fact that the music he plays had nothing in common with anyone else on the flyer. World party. Some ravers worked out how to turn on the swinging chairs ride and we all had a go. Just remembered watching the person “operating” the ride standing there gurning away – then getting distracted while we were on the ride and wandering away. Lots of people yelling out for him to come back and turn the ride off.

Saturday, 4 February 1995

Production: Technology Productions

Venue: 2/20 Orange Grove Road, Liverpool

DJs: Crisis (Live), Pee Wee, Nik Fish, Jumping Jack, John Ferris, Hi-Shock, Nick TT, Vagas

Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/Md4SJ

Description: catch phrase – the way it should be. This was a great rave with a very underground kind of feel to it. The atmosphere was the best point about this rave. It was in a huge warehouse that was divided into two sections. One was the dancefloor, the other was the best chillout I have ever seen. Raised dance podiums were set up in the dance room for people to get even higher (laff). This rave was packed with people, but the warehouse was so massive, that there was plenty of room. The word “dark” had been redefined, if you were not close to the dancefloor or the chillout, you could not see right in front of you. There were two red and two green lasers which covered the ravers in a sea of moving light. The familiar smell of smoke machines was strong. Two giant screens had been set up with motion picture designed especially for CP3 playing. Conveniently, just outside was an all night McDonalds for those midnight hunger cravings. The music was great with the dancefloor pumping hard from 12pm onwards. The chillout had all the usual Punos gear, and tonnes and tonnes of comfy lounges and beanbags. A great rave, with a great atmosphere. Very peculiar circumstances surrounded this party. Was Crisis in jail only months earlier? Was he  let out on good behaviour just for this party?

Did that explain the breath testing roadblocks each side of the venue? And the uniformed police, rangers, and plain clothed “grown-ups” at around 3am who surrounded me at the phone box inside the service station next door who I then heard to say, “Ok, we’ve got him”, after which I slowly hung up my phone, and edge my way past these 5 or so official looking people, who let me leave without intervention? I then ran back to the party, losing my sunglasses case (and supply) along the way. That Sunday night, back at Sundaze at the Pavillion Hotel, the place was full of awkward-looking non-raver types who were watching the goings on, and signalling each other. Of course, I could have just been paranoid!

Description: Almost didn’t happen after promoter Brett Beetroot got cold feet on the day, and so it ended up that Papa Smurf Jason, Karen and the Smurf Village crew banded together to make it happen. A little disjointed in the end, however great to be out and about with good friends away from the city. I remember the stage was set up in a position as so when the sun came up, it was directly behind the DJ.

Brett Beetroot had timed it perfectly so his set would start the minute the sun came over the horizon. I remember thinking to myself, that’s cool and that’s why it was called sunrise. Good tunes, but a little sloppy from memory. The 2 Am surprise was the port-a-loos turning up and reversing through the middle of the dance floor.

Description: This looked as though it was going to be a great party. There was a laser, and lots of great lighting. The sound was loud and pumping. Unfortunately not many people turned up, until about 11:30. Also unfortunately at about the same time so did the police. I had never seen anything like it. They were definitely determined to shut it down. Not only did a car full of police show up, but then another

And another, and another…. eventually about 20 cars and 50 police had showed up strongly determined to stop the music. Local residents had supposedly been complaining, but as the stadium was not close to any homes and you could not hear much from outside the stadium, I don’t believe a word of it. The promoter argued with the police for about half an hour outside while everyone looked on! Finally the music was stopped, and never started again – Ray the Raver

was to be a massive event. In the main room, a HUGE technological construction had been set up at the front, with multiple floors of DJ and lighting equipment. There was more lighting at this place than any other rave I had been to. A huge moving circular lighting rig hovered above the dancefloor, with lasers and tonnes of other lighting on stage. Infusion did a great act, with a bit of pyrotechnics on stage, and a laser dancer dazzled the crowd with beams of all colours. The dancefloor was pumping all night, and there was a good atmosphere. One of 1995′s best.

Description: Seeing Infusion this night was one of the inspirational moments that saw me take up music production seriously. A bit different from their style today, back then Infusion had a strong German trance sound. Seriously fantastic, and to watch it take place without a record (or CD) in sight and I was spellbound. The hardcore room was made of shipping containers! The chill out was seriously cool – loads of couches and bean bags, live graffiti and those big soft clouds hanging in the sky I mean from the roof. Ace party, one of my all time favs. This was a great production put on by the Buck Rogers Ravers. Three rooms – Main, Hardcore, Trance. In a large warehouse, this party went off. The area was an industrial zone, so the music could be as loud as they wanted. Heaps of ravers turned up for what

Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/jqRNN

Description: This was a free rave, close to the city, so as you might expect it was absolutely packed with people. The Graffiti Hall Of Fame is a basketball court with a couple of rooms in shelter. The walls are covered in grafitti paintings. There were two rooms and both were crammed with people. The main area was outside on a basketball court and there were stairs leading to the DJ mixing area. There was also an old Volkswagen that people were dancing on top of that had been brought in especially. A laser covered the people throughout the night

in the main area, and and there was so shortage of smoke (mainly from people with cigarettes!). The music was good, but the sound quality was pretty bad. For some of the night it sprinkled, making the outside area well… err wet. The second room was much better. It was inside in a tiny room that was full of people. The room was extremely hot, because of its size and the partying that was happening. Harder techno and hardcore was the main focus of this room and it had a good atmosphere. Little did we all know that at this exact place the following week there would be another rave with a double shooting. Fortunately no one died. This was a good party for the price ($0 + $5 “donation”), but there were way too many people for the limited space, and the rain made it a bit disappointing also.

Description: Situated in a warehouse, this rave was truly great. Unfortunately however it was not long after the double shooting at a rave, and so the amount of people that turned up was not anywhere near what it should have been. The promoters actually ended up loosing money from this party because of the amount of people. Despite this, the rave was really good. There were two rooms, one a trance room which had incredible lasers all night, and the other the main room. There were tonnes of lasers at this party and the atmosphere was great. Considering the incidents of the previous week, the turnout was also reasonably good, with a few hundred ravers making a wicked party. There was lots of smoke and lights galore. The music was quite good too. A great party spoiled slightly by things out of the promoters hands.

DJs: DJ Denmark, Trans Acid Alliance (LIVE PA), Pee Wee, Paul Holden, Ming D, Vagas, Fenix, Spellbound, Jade, Jumping Jack

Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/9oASP

Description: The Martian Carnival had some great flyers including probably the best flyer ever I’ve ever seen where you could fold it to make what I’d call a fortune teller but Aussies would call a chatterbox (click this link to see them). The Martian on the flyer was also very cool too but yet I digress.

The party was in an indoor go kart track and had a second more hardcore style room upstairs which from memory seemed to be full of angry ugly looking homies which later closed leaving only the main party. The party was relatively small. The laser show was spectacular with a big net screen display the classic laser animations we all know and love damn I love that dolphin, in my opinion just as good as FOD 3/4 and Sonic which were spectacular laser wise and other wise. I remember seeing a few cops trying to shut it down but Fenix had some lawyer or some dude that knew what he was on about and turned them away which was very satisfactory. I heard that Dumbo was shut down but reading the report on it on this site seems everybody went there. Musically I can’t remember much which must of been good I guess cant ever remember what DJ Denmark played or to be honest who he even was or still who he is. All in all wasn’t a bad party though not necessarily a good party aside from the laser show but a bigger attendance may have helped. 10 out of 10 laser wise but overall a 6 out of 10 if I had to judge out of ten. – David

Description: Stardust circus performers – fire eaters, Jugglers, Acrobats and Clowns. Acrobatic gymnastic display at midnight! An absolutely freezing night! It would have been about 5 degrees Celsius and it was painful to your skin. This place was situated basically in the middle of nowhere. A really strange setting, it was next to an ice rink and a couple of other buildings, but there were no homes for many kilometres. The road out the front was a 110kph road just to give you an idea of how remote it was. The rave was held in a small building that from the outside just looked like a public toilet block. The music was pumping loud all night and it was really great. The DJ’s were awesome and everyone was having the time of their lives. Only about two hundred people at the most turned up for this event, just as well because of the size of the room. This was mainly because there was another huge event (Space Cadet IV) on at the same time, which turned out to be a disappointment from what I have heard. There were lasers, the strobe was going berserk, and lots of colourful lights. The police showed up to turn the sound down,

but as soon as they left it went back up to full blast again. There were also jugglers acrobats and fire breathers to add atmosphere to this small, but wicked party. A couple of tiny hiccups throughout the night including the whole sound system dying a couple of times did not affect the mood of the party, everyone just threw balloons around instead! A memorable party, for the cold, the music and the atmosphere.

Saturday, 17 June 1995

Production: ecky thump productions & mYelecent productions

Venue: Glebe Island Silos, Sommerville Rd, Rozelle

DJs: Vagas, Jim Jams, Chester, Tribe, Herb, Jade, Akira, SubZero, Chozie, Q-Tek

Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/C83Tn

Description: Only a few hundred there that night, maybe 300-400 at most. When we were doing the 1st eckythump it was going to be in the ‘hocus pocus’ warehouse on the other side of the (now) anzac bridge in a massive industrial warehouse, we had it sorted we thought, but when we rocked up on the Saturday to set up a boss guy came and kicked us out before we had even started setting up, so I led Rod and the team over to the ‘ov thee earth tribe’ venue (the Glebe Island silos) and we had a look in there and found 3 phase power that was working and no one around, so we just set up and ran with it. It was a great night and the rest is history, no shut down, all good.

Description: The first Utopia/Powerhouse Party. Apparently half the DJs didn’t turn up. It’s amazing the Utopia juggernaut came from such humble beginnings. catch phrase – Everything you need

19950715 Utopia
Chester : I wasn’t billed to play as I was still in my rookie year, and I was back in the city at another party, but I got the call to come out to Minto and jump on the decks to play the morning set, I was stoked to say the least, I got up there and Dj Reaver was playing b4 me, he dared me to start my set with The Beatles - Here Comes The ☀️ Sun, I was like mate no need to dare me it’s 6am let me put that sucker on, I remember looking at the crowd and most were just so happy to hear such a tune!
Now fast forward to the end of my set the cops came at me to shut it down, I’m like really, they said yep that’s it, shut it down now, I went over to have s chat and I said to them, if I shut it off now there’s going to be a 1000 angry punters, let me play on more track and I’ll tell that that’s it, they’ll walk away happy, they had a chat between themselves then turned me and said go on, ONE MORE, I jumped up to my record box and I was quickly looking for the best record to play that one last time, came across Vision 4 Five - Everything You Need and the crowd went nuts, I cranked the volume as loud as possible, Sam came up to me and said mate, this is awesome thanks for playing this track and I was like, what do you mean? He said the name of the party was Utopia - EVERYTHING YOU NEED! so it will forever be etched into my memory!

Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/wCyL8

Description: This rave was outdoors on a property near Gosford. It was miles away from anything and heaps of people

had turned up for this event. A huge stage had been set up, with a couple of lasers which shone over the outdoor sky. Even though it was outdoors, the smoke seemed to stay around, and the lasers went for about a hundred metres before the smoke ran out. This was a pretty spectacular event in a really great outdoor setting. Sequential One was the live act that was playing there, and they were quite good – hyping up the crowd all the time, and giving out free CD’s and other stuff. The music was good, and so was the sound quality. Throughout the night, two bonfires had been lit, the media didn’t like the idea of this and this would get into the newspapers the next week. The vibe was good and a lot of people stayed to watch the sunrise. Overall this rave was really good, except for the fact that there was tonnes of cow crap everywhere and lots of spiders! My first outdoor rave away from the city.

Venue: Cataract Scout Park – Baden Powell Drive, Appin

DJs: Ultimate buzz feat MC Bee, Angus (QLD) & Chris Fresh (ACT) Joe 90, Dave Kirkpatrick, Andrew James, Jumping Jack, Havic, Sheen, Pee Wee, Vagas, Mandrake, Akira, Reaver, Dawso, Spellbound, Q-Tek, Herb, Paul Holden, Jade, Asterix, Abel, The Hoong and I, Crisis, Oasis, Mind D, Jasper, Hi Shock

Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/gOSQM

Description: JLT – Smurf Village 3 (SV3) attracted around 1500-2500 people, it was hard to tally being held at Cataract scout park in Appin. Before you entered the dance area there were a couple of small buildings used as temporary shops/waterbars. It was an ideal position of the park to hold a party. There were two rows of 7 tree’s each side spaced 10 mtrs apart. These two rows of symmetrically

19951202 SV3

aligned tree’s planted in perfect parallel made up the 20mtr-30mtr wide grass dancefloor. Each tree was decked out with lights (par cans, strobes etc). It was a fantastic setup which had a great affect on the vibe and party!! When Ultimate Buzz came on, whoa, they rocked! The crowd went crazy! Seemed prior Raves that attracted internationals let other touring acts know that our Sydney scene pumped and to deliver!! I remember 16 Miniscans on stage that were really potent due to mist and vividly recall a plethora of household light bulbs used as crowd-blinders. The crowd-blinders were lighting up a “SV3″ shaped logo on a stage backboard! The crowd was roaring at this point! Lasers were going off too!! Those that attended should recall DJ Asterix’s “Smurf Village 3 Promo Mix” and after listening to it being ultra hyped to party. The vibe grew as the night went on. I remember hearing conversations all over the ground, typically “un-usual” yet “standard raving deep and meaningfuls”. Back then PLUR was a way of life and ravers were all to happy talking to complete strangers. Arh the good old days.

Eclipse 95

Saturday, 9 December 1995

Production: Total Eclipse Productions with MDMA touring

Venue: Centennial Basket Ball Stadium, 9 Redfern Road, Minto

DJs: Ultrasonic, Herb, Paul Holden, Jumpin’ Jack, Spellbound, Pee Wee, Nik Fish, Vagas, Crisis

Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/Vcmci

Description: This was a pretty new and cool venue (at the time) and it suited the massive act that was to perform live. Ultrasonic, the worlds greatest techno act (as some say) were going to make the dancefloor explode with their live performance. The stadium was packed with thousands of people, and the music was great. At around 2:30 am Ultrasonic came on stage to the cheer of the crowd. They played a couple of hours of hi-nrg music while ravers were partying hard (well those that could move). I was at the front of the crowd, and it was so packed that it was very difficult to move around.

19951209 Eclipse 95

Standing right next to a speaker during a live act with the high frequencies turned up loud is not advisable, so I found out during the next week, when my hearing was affected for the whole week, and I had ringing ears for 3 days afterwards! The crowd was pumping, and the whole night turned out to be very good. A mean way to grab money off innocent ravers was used by the organisers. Just before the main act, they shut off the water supply so that everyone had to buy drinks or die of thirst. The only other option was to go outside and drink, but have to wait in a queue of people that would take longer than Ultrasonics act to get back in. A great night that made ravers rip up the carpet sheets like the world would end the next day.

Google Maps:

Description: Had to look for the signpost to “Tom’s BBQ”. Too bad the court injunction during the day (the council must have been keen to arrange a special sitting on a Saturday) meant the rangers and police were keen to put a stop to it. By midnight, with bonfires, teepees, and lighting going, yet still no ok on the sound, the early ravers parked their cars in a group, popped their boots, and blared out Triple J’s Mix-up in unison! Then we had the PA back on, then off, then on, then off for good, despite the best efforts of our own personal rave lawyer hired specially for the ocassion. Police conceded it would be plain stupid to force everyone back onto the long road home in the middle of the night, so we were allowed to stay on the property. I have some great photos of us all in the morning sunrise.
